How to Configure Port-Forwarding on a Netgear Router (WRG614)

This guide is for setting up port-forwarding on a WRG614 router, but many models share the same interface, so this guide may work for you too.

First, find out your computer's MAC address.

  1. From Windows XP, click the Start button then Run...
(For other operating systems, go here for instructions.)
  2. Type cmd into the box to go to the system command prompt.
  3. Type ipconfig /all and look for a line that says "Physical Address."
It's 6 pairs of numbers and letters separated by a dash, like this: 00-E0-55-BA-05-C3
  4. Write down this number. This is your MAC address. It never changes.
(If have a laptop that isn't ancient, you will see two sets of numbers: one for your wireless card and one for your normal Ethernet adapter. Write down whichever adapter you will use most often.)
  5. Look for "IP address" and write it down too. This is your computer's IP address (duh). It is assigned by your router, so it can change if you restart your computer, or reset your router.
  6. Type exit when you're done.

Next, you'll set up Address Reservation. This tells the router to always assign the same IP address to the same computer. If you have only one computer, you can probably skip this step.

  1. Open your router's configuration manager by typing its URL into your browser. The default IP address is 192.168.0.1 for most routers, but yours may be different. Check your manual.
  2. Click LAN IP Setup then the Add button.
  3. Type in the IP address and Mac address you wrote down earlier
  4. Enter a nickname for your computer in the Device Name box. It's for your convenience, not the router's, so you can type in anything you wish.
  5. Click Add when you're done, and then Apply to apply the changes.

Now, on to Port-Forwarding.

  1. Click Port Forwarding / Port Triggering then Add Custom Service.
  2. Give the Service a name. Name it something like "bittorrent_pc1" (no spaces allowed). Again, this is really more for your convenience than the router's.
  3. Leave TCP/UDP alone.
  4. Type in the starting port and ending port that you have configured your BT client to. If you have multiple PC's, make sure you configure each BT client with a different range of ports.
  5. Now type in the IP address again, then hit Apply. You're done! Happy torrenting!

Repeat these steps with each PC you wish to port-forward.
