A friend of mine from college asked me to make this for the company he worked at.. a postcard to send out to clients, something like a 5″x8″, so I laid it all out in Illustrator and sent him the EPS. A few weeks later, I got a box in the mail from him with a polo shirt, some pens, a mug, and some other tchotchkes. I don’t wear polo shirts and I’ve got dozens of pens and mugs, so really, these were all pretty useless to me. I’m an idiot for not asking for money. The cards look pretty good, even looking back now 6 years later with much more design experience under my belt.
At long last, I found Japan’s infamous square watermelons! After 3 years of living in Japan, it took me until 1 week before leaving for the US to spot one of these.
This photo was taken in front of a small fruit shop at a train station in Central Tokyo (possibly Meguro). Such high quality fruits are usually given to relatives or superiors as gifts — Japanese would never think to buy one of these giftboxes for themselves and eat it. They’re way too expensive. How much do you think one of these watermelons cost?
